What is Autism?
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life, primarily impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.

THE NUMBERS
1.    As many as 1.5 million Americans today are believed to have some form of autism.
2.    The overall incidence of autism is consistent around the globe. 
3.    1 in 94 boys is on the autism spectrum.  It is four times more prevalent in boys than in girls.
4.    Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
5.    A new case is diagnosed almost every 20 minutes.
6.    More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined.
7.    Autism costs the nation over $90 billion per year, a figure expected to double in the next decade.
8.    Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases.
9.    There is no medical detection or cure for autism.
10.    Autism knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries; family income levels; lifestyle choices; or educational levels, and can affect any family and any child.
